Mura: a Non-Touristy Medieval Village Near Barcelona

Barcelona is one of the world's most visited cities, attracting people seeking a sense of celebration, unforgettable experiences, freedom, vibrant beauty and entertainment to escape the stagnation of routine. The city offers a rich tapestry of museums, breathtaking parks, diverse routes to suit all tastes and tempting shopping excursions. However, there is a group of tourists who seek a different kind of pleasure - an appreciation of unspoilt natural beauty and authentic villages. These travellers value genuine experiences, unfiltered by guides or commentary.

If you're in the second category, you'll be enchanted by Mura, a secluded village with medieval charm and a population of just over 200. Located 70 kilometres from Barcelona, the atmosphere in Mura is truly unforgettable, as if time has stood still. The cobbled streets, winding narrow lanes, steep staircases leading to charming courtyards, historic fountains and stone vaults take you back several centuries. Adding to the picturesque scenery are the vibrant flowers and succulents that decorate the courtyards, which look almost surreal, as if created by the hand of an artist!

SIGHTS

The answer to the question of what to see is simple: everything. With no more than two dozen streets in the village, you can explore every nook and cranny within an hour. You are bound to stumble across something during your stroll:

  • Sant Marti Romanesque Church / Iglesia de Sant Marti
  • Sant Antoni Chapel / Ermita de Sant Antoni
  • The most photographed street Font de l'Era / Font de l'Era

GASTRONOMY

In the heart of the city, the Cal Carte restaurant is famous for its delicious home-cooked food. We stumbled upon it by chance and were pleasantly surprised to discover its rich history. Founded in 1964 by the Perich family, the restaurant is now in the capable hands of Jordi Perich, the founder's grandson. What's remarkable is that the restaurant is staffed mainly by family members, who use local ingredients in their cooking. The menu evolves with the seasons and harvests and can always be found on the restaurant's website. Although we didn't plan to dine at Mura and didn't stay until the evening, we vowed to return. Look how inviting it is!

Near the restaurant you'll see a cute little grocery store. Here you can find goodies from local producers - wines, honey, jams and homemade preparations .... Perfect souvenirs!

Don't rush back to Barcelona, the mountain road is the icing on the cake! The thing is, the village is in the Sant Llorenc del Munt i Serra de l'Obac Natural Park, so the views are dizzying! We caught the sunset and stopped to admire the Catalan countryside and the sun streaming down the rocks.

HOW TO GET THERE

By car. The journey takes just over an hour. Navigator coordinates are here.

By bus. There are no buses from the centre of Barcelona, but there are buses from the provinces of Manresa (twice a day from Monday to Saturday) and Terrassa (only on Sundays). You can see the timetable here, on the Mura Town Hall page.
