Gaudi's Casa Mila: Photos, Description, Tickets

On the corner of Provensa street and Paseo de Gracia, Gaudí's 1906 masterpiece stands like a roughly hewn rock. The curves of its balconies and the absence of straight lines make it look as if it were a creation not of man but of Mother Nature herself. This, of course, was the intention of the genius behind Casa Mila and 14 other buildings in Barcelona, Antoni Gaudi.

FASADE

Its appearance has earned it the formidable nickname 'La Pedrera' (the rock quarry) and worldwide fame. You'll know it from a thousand by its irregular, undulating façade of white ceramic tiles and 33 balconies with sinuous wrought-iron railings.

Gaudi used to say that "nothing is art unless it comes from nature". Here too, Antonio transformed the façade of the Casa Mila into formidable cliffs washed by the raging sea. And his rough iron railings, if you use your imagination, will remind you of frozen seaweed.

COURTYARD - PATIO

At the entrance you are given an audio guide, without which it is almost useless to get to know Casa Mila. The tour begins in the patios, of which there are only three in the house. They have several functions: they provide natural light and ventilation. Gaudi also created a system that allowed the house to maintain an optimal temperature in every room - the audio guide will tell you about this and other of his innovative ideas.

The courtyard and the entire entrance area are very colourful, and it is easy to see the natural motifs and mythological frescoes that were always the inspiration and starting point for the master's work.

ROOF

Climb to the roof and you will find yourself in front of the most unusual mosaic chimneys! Many compare them to the Knights Templar with their impressive helmets, but there are certainly other variations. Use your imagination and enjoy! From the roof you have a great view of the whole of Barcelona and its most famous landmark, the Sagrada Familia Cathedral.

attic

The attic is a didactic space with models of Gaudí's main buildings and materials to help you find and understand the links between the great architect's work and the natural world. If you are an architecture fanatic, you can spend 40 minutes in this room alone!

APARTMENTS

The Art Nouveau apartments will take you back in time and help you imagine in detail how wealthy families lived in the early 20th century. Gaudi made a window in almost every room, which was also an innovation. As a result, all the rooms in the house are bright and "alive".

For thirty years the Mila family lived in the spacious mezzanine apartments, while the other twenty apartments were rented out. The main floor can be visited, but there are no decorations from that period. It is now used for temporary exhibitions of new artists.

In 1984, Casa Mila was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Interestingly, it is the first building of the 20th century to be listed.
